6 Ways To Protect Your Computer From Viruses

With computers in almost every home and business, there is now an increased risk of acquiring computer viruses. A computer virus is a program that makes duplicates of itself and infects a users computer files. These viruses can spread from computer to computer infecting files and programs. Computer viruses are such a hazard because they can erase stored information and permanently damage files.

Even a small virus file can give a serious damage to your computer. You can imagine that you need to reinstall whole operating system in case of virus attack and this could give you loss of your important data. It has been believed that the computer virus comes through internet but they can be caused by software and external device like USB. So, installing an antivirus or browser extension is not enough to protect your computer from viruses. You need to take other steps too.

Following I am sharing some easy tips to protect your computer from viruses. By following them, you can easily protect your data.

1. Install Antivirus Software

The first thing is first. The antivirus software has been developed to find and remove the viruses from the computer. Antivirus does not protect your computer from viruses generated by the software but also from the online viruses contained by websites and email. The antivirus software warns you every time when unknown software starts installing in your computer without your permission. Always choose trusted and genuine antivirus software and keep it up to date with latest version.

2. Keep Software Update

When companies like Microsoft and Oracle launch their new software they published then as bugs free software where they aren’t. After the user's experience, they come to know about many problems which make them to bring new upgrade. So to protect your computer from viruses are to keep your software up to date. With every updated version of software the companies fix bugs which can be cause of virus and exploited by hackers.

3. Enable built-in Firewall

It is true that the antivirus software can protect your computer from the viruses but it does not mean that you turn of your Firewall. Firewall is still effective to protect your computer from viruses. Both the Macs and PCs have built-in firewall software. Ensure that they are enable and working fine.

4. Read Emails Wisely

Do you know that according to the Microsoft research 49% computer virus has been infected because of the emails? Yes, this is true. The hackers and even the software companies send virus by email. Just a wrong click on the link in your email can bring virus in your computer. A good rule of thumb is that you do not read the emails from a sender which you do not recognized. Even if you mistakenly open the email, do not click the link or download any file from unrecognized emails.

5. Use Pop-Up Blockers

Majority of spyware and adware start downloading and installing through the pop-up ads. That's why it is important that you are using a pop-up blocker in your browser to secure your online session from such type of software which starts downloading automatically. You also need to enable the option which required your permission to install any software. This could be done through User Account Control option in your computer.

6. Beware of USB Virus

The USB device viruses are not becoming very common. They are hard to recognize and remove once they spread over your computer. To protect your computer from such type of viruses, always install a virus cleaner. Today, there are free USB virus cleaners available which clean the USB from viruses before you get its access. There is also built-in scanner in Windows which scan the USB drive but it is not strong enough to catch all viruses.
